Agni- fire, God of fire

Ajna Chakra- third eye, a spiritual center that resides between the eyebrows

Anjali- hands in prayer position

Anuloma- with the grain, used when talking about breathing

Apana- lower abdomen

Ardha- half

Arjuna- a disciple of Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita

Asana-  a yogic posture or pose

Ashram- a spiritual place devoted to the study and practice of the yoga teachings, the abode of a saint

Atman- transcendental self, Divine consciousness that is within you

Banda- a lock within the body that helps to retain or redirect the life force temporarily

Bhagavad Gita
- " Song of the Lord", sacred yoga scripture in Hinduism, part of the Mahabharata

Bhastrika- a rapid and forceful  breathing technique like the movement of a bellows

Brahma- God as the creator in the Hindu religion, 1 of the three Gods in the Hindu trinity

Bujanga- cobra

Chakra- wheel, energy centers within the subtle body mostly found along the spine

Chatura- four

Chitta- the subconscious mind

Danda- stick or staff

Dharana- concentration, the 6th limb (stage) of yoga

Dharma- Divine law, Cosmic law, the law of righteousness

Dhyana- meditation, the 7th limb (stage) of yoga

Dwi- two

Eka- one

Garuda- eagle

Ganga (Ganges)- the most holy river in India

Guru- that which can bring you from darkness to light, a spiritual master or guide

Hanuman- Monkey-god know for his devotion to Lord Rama and his amazing strength

Hasta-  arm or hand

Hatha Yoga- a combination of breath control, postures, bandhas, mental exercises, mudras and behavioral adjustments that lead to union with the Supreme Reality

Jalandhara Bandha- the chin lock

Janu- knee

Japa- the repetition of a mantra

Kali-
(lit. the black one) the destroyer of illusions and ego attachment, fearsome "dark" Hindu Goddess

Kapala- skull

Kapalabhati- a bellow-like breathing technique

Karma-  (lit. action) The universal law of cause and effect, events in one's life that are caused by past actions

Krishna- (Krsna) (lit. the dark one) the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu

Kundalini
- coiled or the coiled one, the spiritual power that resides at the base of the spine in the muladhara charka

Laya- merging, dissolution

Mala-  garland, rosary

Mandala- circle

Mantra- powerful sacred sounds or words that are repeated by an individual for  protection, purification or spiritual advancement

Moksha-  Self Realization, liberation

Mudra- seal

Mula Banda- root lock, rectal lock

Nadi- the channels in which the subtle body uses to move energy

Namaskara- greeting

Nataraja- the dancing form of Shiva

Nidra- sleep

Nirvana- spiritual liberation

Niyama
- daily observances for self control in the practice of yoga

OM (AUM)- the sound symbolizes the Absolute, the primordial sound from which the universe springs forth

Pada- leg or foot

Padangusta- big toe

Padma- lotus

Parsva- side

Patanjali- a sage who compiled the Yoga Sutras (the path of Raja Yoga) in the 4th century

Prakriti- nature

Prana- the vital life force of the body

Pranayama- yogic breathing exercises used to bring the vital life force under control and consequently the mind

Puraka- inhalation

Rajakapota- king pigeon

Rama (Ram)- the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu

Rechaka- exhalation

Sadhana- your practice toward spiritual realization

Samadhi-  meditative ecstasy, complete immersion in cosmic consciousness or Supreme Reality

Suryanamaska- sun salutations


Sadhu- an ascetic or wandering monk

Sannyasi- a renunciate who is dedicated to the goal of Self-realization

Satyam- truth

Seva
- service

Shakti- orginal creative energy in it's feminine form,  spiritual power

Shanti- peace

Shiva (Siva)- Hindu God of Destruction, the Highest Yogi who imparted the teachings of yoga to the world

Siddha- accomplished

Supta- lying on your back, supine

Tapa
(Tapasya)- austerities used to burn up impurities heat, the " fire" of yoga

Tri- three

Trikona- triangle

Uddiyana Bandha- abdominal lock

Ujjayi- victorious, a slow breath made through the nose that sounds like the ocean

Urdhva- upward

Veda(s)- (lit. knowledge) one of the oldest ancient sacred scriptures of Divine wisdom

Vinyasa- linking, linking asanas (poses) together with each other and the breath

Vishnu- God as the Preserver

Vriksha- tree

Yama(s)- restraints for one leading a yogic life like being nonviolent and truthful

Yoga- yoke or union, spiritual practice that draws one into union with God

Yogi(s)- a person who practices yoga, a male practitioner of yoga

Yogini- a female practitioner of yoga
